Larry Pope addresses the Hickory City Council on the issue of respect. He talks about how he brought his concerns to the City of Hickory and they dismissed his concerns. He doesn't feel that he was given proper respect and felt like he was wasting his time. He went back to the Housing Board, but they acted as a rubber stamp for what the Director wanted to do. He also went into past issues of lack of respect. And he spoke about the funding that HUD can take away from the City.
The Mayor responded and said a meeting was scheduled with Mr. Pope and they asked him to submit specific questions in relation to HUD. He says that they were never given the questions. There are questions that the Housing Authority is going to have to address. The Mayor inferred by stating figures that Mr. Pope's brother was a major beneficiary of subject monies awarded.
Mr. Pope came back to the podium and further retorted the Mayor's rebuttal, because he stated that he didn't want anyone in the city to misconstrue what had happened. Mr. Pope stated that he had recused himself in the issues involving the awarding of contracts involving his brother. He says he did what he thought he was supposed to do. The director said she didn't know (understand these issues involving Larry's Brother). Larry further talked about the contacts between the Mayor and the Director, the hiring of the director's husband, the misappropriation of funds related to bonuses and falsifying records... He says the issue could have been settled locally and didn't have to go to HUD and the Federal Government. The Housing Authority was established through the City Charter and Mayor doesn't know what he should know. He asked that in the future the Mayor please listen to Citizens when they come forward.

Now I'm confused. I thought that Citizen's comments at council meetings were a time for the Council to listen - not a time to debate and have a dialogue. I thought that was supposed to be done in the bathroom before the meeting. What exactly was the rule again?

This is great. Harry and Hound comment to take your eye off the REAL story. When did Mr. Pope complain to HUD? Was it AFTER his brother's contract was terminated? AFTER taking over $500,000 from the Housing that was found to not be legal? Was it AFTER he was not reappointed by Mayor Wright? Did Mr. Pope profit? I would bet a big fat YES! Mr. Pope has hurt the very organization that is to HELP the ones he wants to represent. Got to admit, he is slick. The real story doesn't fit Mr. Hound's agenda so he blows it off. The HDR never published the name of "a family member" (Mr. Larry Pope's brother) in their story. Why is that? The Hound never questioned it. I think there is more to the story that the HDR has published and more than Mr. pope would like to come out. Dig deeper into the story Hound.
Here you go again. I have no agenda. I went to the City Council meeting the other night and this, for all who were present, was the big issue of the evening.
I placed this on the blog without personal comment. People can listen and draw their own conclusions. I haven't blown off anything. I believe this is neither the beginning nor the end of this issue and believe there will be more to come.
Larry said in this presentation before Council that he recused himself in dealings with his brother. That is more than I can say for some of our local officials on issues of Low Interest loans and indirect beneficiary business dealings.
I think what you have written leaves those who read your comment wondering "What is your agenda?"
If you have information we would appreciate you sharing it with us. The info I presently have has been divulged on this site.
If you have all of the answers, then why do I need to dig deeper. Why didn't the HDR print the name? I guess everybody is out to get somebody you are referring to? Who might that be? So you can just cut to the chase and tell us exactly what happened. Why the games?
