It would take the people of Hickory to bring something like this to fruition. Catawba County has an excellent Economic Development Corporation with very intelligent, hard working people employed - but they work for Catawba County as a whole. Hickory does have an Economic Development Director, but he couldn't envision and bring about something of this magnitude on his own. It would take many more subject-knowledgeable people to make it happen.
OK,
I know for a fact that these energy developers are willing to listen. We got the All-American city Award becausen of focus, but we can't do the same for something like this? Maybe we need to worry about priorities.
We've got to go get this stuff. We have to focus, because it will take a futurist's vision to make this happen. We can't sit back and wait for this to develop or wait for these people come to us.
We have to get out front and lead on this, otherwise we'll be getting scraps, if anything.
I can see our local government leaders waiting to see this develop and then saying, "Let's go see how city XYZ did it." I'd rather city XYZ come to us and see how we did it.
