The following is the interview of Mayor Rudy Wright on 1290 WHKYam Radio's First talk program with Hal Row.
WHKY does not archive these programs and make them available to the public, so I am putting this important public interview up under Fair Use guidelines.
(Segment 1) - Mayor and Hal talk about the Super Bowl. Hal and Mayor talk about the negative publicity the Mayor has received recently. Joe Brannock calls in about the signs and what the Mayor said that day.
(Segment 2) - Joe Brannock about the illegal signs and the Mayors comments. Larry Pope calls in to speak about the Bond Referendum, Commission, and the Diversity on the Commission.
(Segment 3) - Mayor talks about Bond Referendum, Commission, and process.
(Segment 4) - Lady calls in about burned areas along interstate. I (Thom Shell) call in about the Riverwalk Greenway and the multi-jurisdictional issues involving that area -- Burke County.
Hound Notes: Seems to me that the local PTB are saying, 'We are friends of one another. We know what is best for Hickory. We don't care what the laws are. If we do it it is alright. We are above these laws, even though we are the very people who passed them. Why are you always so negative, you S** o* a B, @##$#@$#@@, ###*++__&*&^&, *!!!**&... Sit down, shut up, Don't call us out on this or there's gonna be trouble!!!'

Interesting information about the jurisdictional problems with the Riverwalk Greenway. I always thought that the river marked the boundary between Catawba and Caldwell Counties. I can see now that I wasn't informed. How many other Hickory citizens have the same wrong idea?
Catawba - Burke issue on this side of the bridge. Caldwell is on the other side of the 321 bridge. City of Hickory is part of Alexander, Catawba, Caldwell, and Burke counties.
We live in Lakeland Park, and there is about 3 to 4 homes or more on 12th Street Drive NW that are considered Burke county in the city limits, and at the 321 bridge, it covers Burke, Catawba, and Caldwell. Go figure. I think retired chief of police Lucas said he paid Burke county taxes and city of Hickory taxes and not Catawba county.
It is a lot more than 3 or 4 homes. I'm going to attempt to map it out.
I think it's incredible that Rudy's defense of his actions were that he's not a professional politician and can't be expected to know the campaign laws like a pro. He has run numerous times and has had to report numerous times. Furthermore the treasurer is a lawyer. If a seasoned politician and a lawyer know know the basics of the law - who does?
The in kind donation of the discount he received for his signs should have been reported and they certainly had some experts on placement of signs there when I ran years ago and had every sign scrutinized or thrown away. These laws aren't complex codicils in some 10,000 page document, they are basic campaign rules.
If you do accept incompetence as a defense on something simple like this, it begs the question: What else in Hickory's governance is not being done professionally, legally or competently?
I fully agree with the Mayor that he has the right to support and campaign for what he wants. But he has the responsibility to ensure that public affairs are handled legally, competently, and transparently.
